The Upper Baker Dam Spillway Stabilization project addressed potential failure modes in the dam’s spillway chute’s foundation, identified during a 2019 Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Part 12D dam safety workshop. After extensive analysis, design, and consultation with FERC, the project came to fruition.

These honors underscore our longstanding commitment to safety, environmental responsibility, and meaningful partnerships within the dredging and marine construction industry.
Brennan was recognized with the Safety Excellence Award for a Dredging Project for our sustained, high-performance safety culture on the Grasse River Remediation Project. Two of our collaborative projects were also honored with Environmental Excellence Awards in the remediation category—one for our work on the Torch Lake Drum Removal Pilot Study, alongside Anchor QEA, EA Engineering, and Honeywell International —and the other for the Milwaukee River OU2 Remediation Project, in partnership with GEI Consultants and We Energies.

At the heart of Duluth, Minnesota—near Lake Superior—Brennan led a large-scale environmental remediation project at Munger Landing, removing historical contamination from over 34 acres of the St. Louis River. This multi-year effort addressed legacy pollutants including PCBs, mercury, dioxins, and furans through precision hydraulic dredging, sediment dewatering, water treatment, and the strategic placement of clean sand and habitat materials.

When a structural failure at the Demopolis Lock and Dam in Alabama brought barge traffic to a halt on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), R&D Maintenance, and J.F. Brennan Company (Brennan) joined forces to deliver a fast, high-stakes solution. The breach—described by Colonel Jeremy Chapman of USACE as “a hole the size of a school bus”—stopped commercial navigation across two major waterways and threatened economic losses in the millions each month.
We recently completed the cleanup of two wastewater ponds for a large producer of transportation fuels. Using a remotely controlled dredge, Brennan removed wastewater sludge from impoundments on the refinery site and dewatered the material with six 2-meter belt filter presses. The remotely controlled dredge added a layer of safety to the project, preventing any health risks that a Leverman might face if exposed to hydrogen sulfide gas released during the dredging process.

The Third Ward Milwaukee River remediation project is a pivotal step in cleaning up the Milwaukee River. It targets the site of a decommissioned manufactured gas plant that once operated in the area.
Brennan was selected as the prime contractor for this ambitious project, tasked with dredging contaminated sediments and treating water to restore the river's health. Working closely with GEI Consultants, Inc. (GEI), the project’s design engineers, Brennan is delivering comprehensive solutions that combine environmental restoration, water treatment, and marine construction expertise.
